Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a widely used supplement known for its ability to relieve arthritis, reduce pain, and support joint health.Uses and Pharmacology
The sulfur content of MSM can be used by the body to maintain normal connective tissues. MSM has also exhibited possible anti-inflammatory, antiatherosclerotic, and chemopreventative activities along with free radical scavenging.Alam 1983, Beilke 1987, Ebisuzaki 2003 MSM has been reported to alleviate allergies, arthritis, GI upset, musculoskeletal pain, and to boost the immune system. It also possesses antimicrobial effects against organisms such as Giardia lamblia, Trichomonas vaginalis, and some fungi. The suggested mechanism is that MSM may bind to surface receptor sites, blocking the interaction of parasite and host.
Can Decrease Joint Pain
Decreasing joint and muscle pain is one of the most popular MSM methylsulfonylmethane uses.
It has been proven to be of benefit to those suffering from joint degeneration, which is a common source of discomfort in the knees, back, hands, and hips. [7]
MSM has been found in numerous studies to reduce inflammation in the body extensively. It also prevents the cartilage, which is a flexible tissue that protects the ends of the bones in joints from breaking down.
2. Increases Glutathione Levels Due To Its Anti-inflammatory Properties
Scientific studies have shown that MSM has anti-inflammatory qualities.
MSM is said to block NF-kB, a protein complex involved in the body’s inflammatory responses. MSM can also boost glutathione levels, a powerful antioxidant produced by the body. [8]
3. Reduces Muscle Damage and Stress to Hasten Recovery After Exercise
Muscle damage and oxidative stress rise during intense exercise. Athletes endure muscle tightness and pain as a result of this, and this hinders their performance and training.
By lowering inflammation and oxidative stress, MSM can help muscles recover faster after intense exercise. It might also help with pain relief after a long session of activity. [9]
4. Helps Relieve Arthritis Symptoms by Reducing Stiffness And Pain
Arthritis is an inflammatory condition that causes pain, stiffness, and a reduction in motion rate in the joint.
MSM is used as a natural alternative to medicines to alleviate arthritis-related symptoms due to its potent anti-inflammatory qualities. [10]
It can also improve the efficiency of other commonly used arthritis supplements like glucosamine sulfate, boswellic acid, and chondroitin sulfate.
5. Reduces Inflammation Which Will Help Relieve Allergy Symptoms
Allergic rhinitis is an allergic reaction that causes sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, and nasal congestion, among other symptoms. [11]
By reducing inflammation and limiting the release of cytokines and prostaglandins, MSM helps to reduce allergic reactions.
6. Strengthens Keratin Which Could Improve Skin Health
Keratin is a protein found in the hair, skin, and nails and serves as the main structural component.
The use of MSM can help to improve skin health by functioning as a sulfur donor for Keratin. It also aids in the reduction of inflammation, which can harm skin cells and create premature aging indications such as wrinkles. [12]
It may even help alleviate rosacea symptoms, which is a skin condition that causes redness, irritation, and inflammation. [13]
May Be Able To Fight Cancer
MSM’s efficiency in combating cancer cells is one of the most recent fields of research. Even though the research is still in its early stages, the results have so far been positive.
It appears to work by disrupting cancer cell DNA and cause cancer cells to die. It also appears to inhibit cancer cells from spreading, a process known as metastasis. [14]
Saftey
MSM is regarded to be safe, and it is generally well accepted, with few negative side effects. [18] Several clinical researches used doses from MSM methylsulfonylmethane 1,000mg to 6,000mg per day. These studies show that even big doses are safe. However, some sensitive people to MSM may have minor reactions, such as nausea, bloating, and diarrhea. It may produce moderate skin or eye irritation.
MSM appears to have no interactions with drugs, herbs, supplements, or meals. It is recommended to consult with your doctor if you have started any medication before taking the MSM methylsulfonylmethane dietary supplement. [20]
Sulfur’s primary function in the body is to transport oxygen across cell membranes.
Organic sulfur can easily pass the blood-brain barrier. It prevents and repairs damage. It also restores cell membrane elasticity and permeability, which makes it easier for waste products to be eliminated from the nerve cells.
Sulfur plays an important role in the body. It is necessary for the production of key proteins and the building blocks of those proteins, which are known as amino acids. For example, sulfur is needed for the synthesis, or creation, of the amino acid - glutathione. MSM supports antioxidants.
Insulin↓ is a protein chain. It includes an alpha side and a beta side and those two sides are bonded via sulfur molecules. So a deficiency of sulfur can result in a decreased insulin production.
Insulin facilitates entry of glucose into muscle, adipose and several other tissues.
Insulin stimulates the liver to store glucose in the form of glycogen
Insulin decreases the concentration of glucose in blood.
Insulin promotes synthesis of fatty acids in the liver.
Insulin inhibits breakdown of fat in adipose tissue.
Most notably, people with diabetes have an imbalance of how their body creates, regulates, and uses insulin.
MSM (MethylSulfonylMethane) is the organic sulfur form, which naturally occurs in all living organisms and is biologically active. Since antiquity, sulfur-containing sources have been used to promote health. Organically bound sulfur is an integral part of many proteins, hormones, enzymes, the cartilage substance and many other important compounds and structures in the body. In addition to calcium, potassium, magnesium, sodium and phosphorus, sulfur is one of the building elements in the body´s structures. It is, after calcium and phosphorus, the third most abundant mineral; a human organism contains about 140-150 grams of sulfur.
Sulfur is a constituent of the scleroprotein collagen in the connective tissue, the red blood corpuscles, of muscles, skin, hair and nails (creatine). Sulfur is responsible for form and irmness in these tissues. Sulfur is involved in the formation of bile acids (fat digestion) and occurs in the B-vitamins thiamine and biotin. The element sulfur is important for blood coagulation, the formation of insulin and the sulfur-containing amino acids taurine, methionine and cysteine.
Above all MSM is popular to maintain the function of the locomotor system. Organic sulfur is needed to nourish the cartilage mass in joints. A study published in 1995 found that the sulfur concentration in a cartilage attacked by arthritis is only one-third the concentration of a healthy cartilage.
Sulfur is also part of the glutathione, which is formed by the organism itself. Glutathione is the most important substance for the energy formation in the body cells and the most potent antioxidant, which captures free radicals that arise constantly in the cell metabolism.
The body can’t make sulfur, it’s common in food, so supplementation is rarely necessary. But its safety and real-world use show its value as a frequent remedy in alternative and traditional medicine.
MSM is made up of 34% sulfur – the fourth most abundant mineral in the human body. Sulfur is an important nutrient for the maintenance of healthy joints, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissue.3
Sulfur is also a key component of collagen and a building block of keratin, supporting healthy hair, skin and nails.
I still believe that as you age this can be of benefit and should be taken 3-5 days a week…..
Dosage:
The amount most people find useful is 1 to 1.5 teaspoons per 100 lbs of body weight twice per day dissolved into warm or hot water. You may also eat the whole crystals raw. Each teaspoon is 4 grams.
So a 100 lb person would take 1 to 1.5 teaspoons first thing in the morning on an empty stomach and then again 2 hours after lunch on an empty stomach another 1 to 1.5 teaspoon.
A 200 lb person would take 3 teaspoons also equal to 1 Tablespoon twice daily.
Take it every 12 hours. Caution if taken late in the evening you could experience an inability to sleep. It MUST be taken twice a day! Some people need to work up to this level very, very, slowly. If your system is generally sensitive you can always start lower and work up to the recommended dose, however, more tends to work best.
We recommend ~8-10 grams of organic sulfur per day on average, though many people take quite a bit more.
For an average person with no specific health issues, a rounded teaspoon (about ~4grams) twice a day is about right, as the excess organic sulfur is cleared from the body in about 12 hours.
Easiest and best tasting way to eat it: You can put it in your mouth and immediately swig some non-acid tart juice like lime and it will melt in your mouth as you swallow.
Alternately, let it stand in warm - at first - water for 12 hours, or simply chew it up and chase it with a nice flavored liquid, or buy it already in our capsules (OxySulfur” Organic Sulfur is already in our OxyEarth®).
A favorite way to take it is an electric hand mixer mixing a bunch of lime juice in a dispenser and drinking it all day from the fridge. The lime tastes away.
SULFUR BINDS WITH THE OXYGEN, BRINGS IT TO YOUR CELLS, AND CARRIES OUT THE TRASH….
Information:
Natural sulfur. We’re 6% –and nobody has enough. I kept hearing about how in addition to its other properties MSM is a non-toxic sulfur-based oxygenator (liquid, granules, or creams). The whole key with MSM is to take it consistently (6-8 months) at high enough dosages with vitamin C and possibly taken along with some DMSO.
100% maritime pine tree Lignin, and is processed to RETAIN the maximum crystalline matrix
The most success we’ve seen is at 500 mg of MSM for every 30 pounds of body weight twice a day.
I was first intrigued by MSM when I heard on a tape that it was found concentrated in ocean plankton, one of our two planetary oxygen sources. I reasoned that if it was that close to the oxygen and chlorophyll creation action while floating in pure ocean minerals, then surely it might have some special properties. If so, it might make an excellent adjunct to any oxygen supplementation regimen.
It turned out my intuition was right. Most of us don’t get enough sulfur from naturally occurring DMSO and MSM because the fertilizer used in our mega-crop agriculture is no longer natural manure. The sulfur cycle has been broken. Chemical fertilizers do not provide sufficient sulfur for the plants we eat.
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a naturally occurring biologically active sulfur and serves many functions in the body. It is one of the third most abundant elements in Nature and within all living organisms.~ Mr Oxygen
“MSM is so important in maintaining good health and flexibility in the tendons, mussels, ligaments, skin, and nerves and serves so many other vital functions in the body.”
Just to name a few:
Oxygenates the blood so that red blood cells can deliver more oxygen and nutrients to the cells.
Improves the lung and all cell permeability to increase lung capacity and increase oxygen intake to the body.
Helps neutralize allergenic reactions to pollen, different types of foods, animals, and fat allergies.
Increases bile function and has a cleansing effect on the digestive tract.
Protects against the harmful effects of toxins, radiation, and pollution.
Disinfects the blood, resists bacteria, and protects the protoplasm of the cells.
Helps to normalize, allergic reactions, stress, drug hypersensitivity, inflammation of mucous membranes, and inflammatory disorders including all forms of arthritis, muscle cramps, and infectious parasites of all kinds.
Is excellent in maintaining flexibility in arteries, improving oxygen flow, and keeping the arteries clean and clear of arterial plaque from forming.

“MSM is truly one of the most important supplements and naturally occurring nutrients in the ozone-soaked heavens. Nature has magically provided MSM to all of us living beings on earth to keep us happy and healthy.”
By the way, and for your information, ‘Lignisul’ is the only manufacturer made all-natural MSM products from pine trees. MSM has been shown to be taken up by sulfur-containing amino acids in the body.’ The sulfate reserve in humans is among the smallest of animal species ‘ and may be depleted by a low-protein diet” and by acetaminophen,” among the most commonly prescribed analgesics for osteoarthritis.[MSM creates]
1) Analgesia and nerve blockade,
2) increase of blood supply,
3) anti-inflammatory action,
4) effects on collagen-it tends to soften collagen, lessen scar tissue, and
5) reduction of muscle spasm. MSM may exert [tissue remodeling] effects, as we have observed reduced incidence of scarring and overall improvement in scleroderma patients who used MSM topically. Most people take MSM to try to relieve the swelling and pain caused by tendinitis, rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis. It primarily assists with collagen synthesis, forming skin, blood vessels, and hair, and strengthening nails. What’s great about MSM is that there are no known side effects that come along with taking it. It is also a bonus that, unlike DMSO, there is no smell of oysters or garlic on the skin or breath afterward. When a person uses DMSO, 15 percent of it is converted into MSM, also called DMSO2, as it oxidizes. You might be wondering why the two should be used together, as DMSO basically turns into MSM in the body. One reason is to obtain all the sulfur-enriching benefits without the DMSO smell. MSM and DMSO together are excellent for supporting more serious conditions like Lyme disease, lupus, and cancer (from one of the referenced books; I misplaced the citation).
